Instilling confidence in Year 6 students at a London girls prep school

Seeking innovative enrichment as part of the post-11+ curriculum, Old Vicarage School partnered with CATALYST to instill deeper confidence and resilience as the students prepared for secondary school interviews and life beyond OVS.

CATALYST trained the OVS teaching staff to deliver a course focused on critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication over a 1-week period, following successful completion of the 11+ exam. It was recently reviewed and featured in Good Schools Guide.

The final presentation was a standout moment, where parents and educators saw the girls' transformation firsthand.

  • “CATALYST provides further enrichment – focusing on critical thinking and teamwork to find solutions to world issues. Working on meaningful projects, collaborating with peers, and developing presentation skills will set our students up for life.”

    - Clare Strickland, Head of School

  • “One of the most remarkable post-11+ activities this hack has witnessed was the CATALYST programme, by Winchester College, in which the year 6 girls were deeply involved when we visited. Having investigated the impact of technology on modern society, they were researching global problems and how these might be tackled both on a global and a local scale. The next step would be to present their ideas effectively. They discussed the concept of ethical decisions, catalysts and, before long, were using terminology such as deontology and utilitarianism like regular philosophers. All the while, soft skills were being honed.”
