sssread chrome extension: gamifying online reading

Horizons change project

Navigating the vast landscape of the internet can be a daunting task, especially for the younger generation, which often falls into the spiral of endless scrolling and digital distractions. Recognising this challenge, a team of six middle and high schoolers have birthed "SSSRead" — a Google Chrome extension designed to transform and enhance the online experience.

At its core, SSSRead gamifies online reading, offering users points for every word they consume. This rewards-based mechanism not only motivates users to engage more productively with content but also promotes healthy internet habits, especially crucial in a post-COVID-19 world.

Targeting primarily teenagers and children, SSSRead taps into the psychological wiring of these age groups, which respond more positively to reward-driven stimuli. While it offers appeal across generations, its prime effectiveness lies with the youth, encouraging them to find a balance between leisure and learning. As concerns mount over screen time and digital wellbeing, SSSRead emerges as a beacon, ushering in a new era of mindful and motivated online exploration.
