What Makes An Ideal CATALYST Candidate?

There is no such thing as a 'typical' CATALYST student, but here are at least some of the qualities and characteristics we look for and why.

Are you thinking about applying to the CATALYST programme but unsure if you're the right fit?

Well firstly, there is no ‘right fit’. At CATALYST we aren’t constrained by traditional assessments, ways of teaching or preconceptions of ‘success’. That means we are able to identify and lift up the most passionate and curious students, regardless of their academic or personal backgrounds.

That being said, we are selective, offering only 30-35 places per programme. We are meticulous about building a well-balanced cohort that will thrive in the CATALYST environment. So for those who want a more direct answer, below are the most important qualities of an ideal CATALYST applicant.

A desire to be a catalyst for change

Probably the most important quality of an ideal CATALYST candidate is a passion for making a positive change in the world. CATALYST is looking for students who possess the desire and drive to be, pardon the pun, a catalyst for change. This usually comes hand in hand with an innate sense of curiosity paired with having future foresight and the ability to think about the long-term impact of their actions.

A willingness to engage in debate and discourse

This passion for change and impact should be equally coupled with a willingness to argue viewpoints and engage in thoughtful conversation. An ideal CATALYST candidate would be confident in their ability to hold and engage in conversations and debates. They would be able to express their opinions clearly and effectively and be able to listen and respond to the perspectives of others. Being comfortable in group settings and being able to contribute to a productive and respectful dialogue is essential.

The ability to work well in a team

Another important quality is the ability to work well as part of a team. CATALYST encourages collaboration and the exchange of ideas, so being bubbly and able to connect with others is definitely a plus.

It's important that a candidate is able to communicate clearly, actively listen to others, and work towards a common goal. They should be able to recognise the strengths of their team members and utilise them to achieve success. Being able to give and receive constructive feedback is also important in a team setting.

Naturally curious & open-minded

A CATALYST candidate should also have a strong desire to learn and explore new ideas, concepts and perspectives. They should be able to approach new information with an open mind and be willing to consider different viewpoints. They should be curious about the world around them and have the willingness to question the status quo. They should be able to seek out knowledge and be proactive in their learning.

Being open-minded allows students to be receptive to new information, and adapt to changing circumstances. With these qualities, CATALYST students will be able to continuously develop their skills and knowledge and be able to bring fresh perspectives to their field of interest.

Comfortable with independent exploration and learning

Finally, an ideal CATALYST candidate would be independent in their learning and research. They would have a natural curiosity and desire to explore subject areas on their own, without needing constant guidance. They would be able to take initiative and seek out knowledge and be able to apply their learning in a meaningful way. This independence is a key ingredient to allowing students to continuously deepen their understanding and skills in their field of interest.

If you possess these qualities and are ready to take the next step in making a positive impact on the world, then CATALYST might just be the perfect programme for you.
